Q:
How Do I Use It?
Through either our interactive LocoRemote or the TV Guide, you can choose one of LocoTV’s unique shows to stream to your home or office. The files are normal computer video files but up to a broadcast TV quality.
Use the highest quality playback that your internet connection will allow. If the video constantly skips, press the pause button and restart playing after a couple of minutes. This allows your ADSL to catch up by buffering. Alternatively, you can play back using the lowest quality setting.
Please note that viewing shows will use part of your download cap. Most shows at Medium resolution are between 90 and 140Mb. High-res shows are double that, roughly, and half it for Low-res shows.
Q: Can I watch the shows on my PC?
This is the easiest way to watch LocoTV. It simply streams to your computer. Your default video player will then play the shows up to a resolution of 768 x 384 pixels. We decided upon this size after extensive testing and, right now in Australia, it’s the best balance of quality, download speed and download allocation from your ISP. We recommend an ADSL2 connection for the best results.
If you're with iiNet or Westnet, you can now watch selected shows quota free via the 'Freezones' on their websites.
Q: Can I watch it on my TV?
This is the question we are asked more often than any other and the answer is more simple than you might think. Yes!
Audio is the easiest. All you need is a cable from your PC’s speaker out port (usually Minijack 1/8”) to your TV’s audio in port. This may also be Minijack 1/8” or it could be RCA L & R (the white and red plugs). Either way, it’s a cheap and easy cable to find.
Video on your TV is slightly more complicated but still quite easy to do. If you have a new Plasma or LCD TV it’s a snap. Simply unplug your monitor and use a VGA to VGA cable, just like your normal monitor’s cable. The other end will plug into a VGA port on your TV. You then need to select the correct input signal using your TV’s remote control (usually something called PC Input) and you’re done (it might be called something else, just scroll through your inputs until you get a signal).
Most new laptops allow you to run their built-in screen simultaneously with your plasma and are ideal for this purpose. All new laptops (and many older ones) also have an S-Video out. Using an S-Video to Composite RCA Video Cable, you’ll be able to get a signal out or your PC straight into the familiar yellow RCA plug of almost any type of TV. These cables are available for $10 off eBay or any electronics store and many come with the Minijack audio cable built in as well.
Perhaps the best option, if it’s available on both your PC and your TV, is to use the HDMI cable. It supports the highest quality and simplest connection between a PC and your television. HDMI will also usually make a 16:9 TV display our 16:9 widescreen broadcasts (most of them are) correctly without any letterboxing (squishy vision where we all look too fat).
Signal Out Of Range Error
Should your TV give this error, it means your PC’s desktop settings are greater than 1024 pixels in width. Setting your display settings to 1024 x 768 will fix this problem.
Also, remember to choose Full Screen Playback to eliminate the unwanted Windows graphics from around the video and then it will look like any other TV show, except you can watch it whenever you want, pause it, zip back and forth through the show with ease and generally have more flexibility.
