Our local fishing legend today is Andrew Keith, a jigging specialist, especially for the legendary samsonfish, which is something that Perth anglers take for granted. A “small sambo” to WA locals is about 30 pounds …
These fish, powered by Mack Trucks, school in the deep waters off of the world’s most isolated city throughout the months that see temperatures push towards 42 and 45 degrees Celcius. Many articles have been written about the power and, 10 years since “jigging” became popular, the fish are bigger, meaner and hanging out with the sort of sharks your mother warned you about.
A school of these relatives of the yellowtail kingfish and amberjack can number in the thousands and, during this episode, Steve fishes with his expert jigging instructor Andrew Keith.
Andrew is a jigging specialist, using 80lb custom braid and rods designed to work big lures in water from 100 to 500 metres deep. In this experiment, the boys use every type of outfit and lure (including 22mm ring spanners) to decide just what is required to be a serious sportfishing jigger in the 2010 Perth Game Fishing scene led by Rhyss Whittred and Nick Hocking.
At one stage they have a 5 way hookup of 25 kilo plus fish try to annihilate their tackle in less than 15 minutes. So … just what DOES it take to stop samsonfish and other Perth sportfish without you sending the Visa card into shock? Today we’re going to find out!
